Patient video consultations

Patient video consultations

In some services, we use video consultations instead of face-to-face appointments. This means you have the appointment with us by video link rather than come into the hospital. It is an excellent way to provide you with information, advice and support at a place that is most convenient to you whether this is at home, in a quiet space at work, or elsewhere.

How to access this depends on which hospital or community service provides your care.

Attending your video consultation

Your clinician or a member of the booking team will advise you that your appointment will be held as a video consultation.

Five (5) minutes before your appointment time, please click on the ‘Start video call’ button below to select the service you have an appointment with.

The video clinic service works best when accessed using the Google Chrome web browser on a PC, or Safari web browser on Mac (webcam required). You can also access our video consultations using a smartphone or tablet.

For more information please download our video consultation information leaflet.

1. Please have the patient information leaflet on had for the call. Go to the entry point on the service website and click the 'start video call' button. 2. Enter your name and phone number when prompted. 3. Enter the clinic's online waiting area. From here you can view your position in the queue and read any messages from the service. 4. When the clinician arrives, the consultation proceeds.

What to expect

If your appointment is to be held as a video consultation, your clinician or a member of the booking team will inform you and you will be sent a letter containing your appointment details.

Five minutes before your appointment time, click on the ‘Start video call’ button above for the service you have an appointment with.

You will be taken through a series of steps to ensure that your equipment is set up correctly. Once the steps have been completed, you will be prompted to enter your name, date of birth and telephone number and accept the terms and conditions. This information is not stored beyond the length of the video consultation.

Once these steps have been followed, click on the ‘Start Call’ button and you will enter the waiting room until your consultation begins. You will see yourself on the video and hear music. The waiting room is private and you will not see other patients.

When the consultation is ready to begin, your image will shrink and move to the corner of the screen and you will see your clinician.

For more information about what to expect on your video appointment with your clinician, please read our leaflet on information about your video appointment with a clinician.

Frequently asked questions

If I have a video consultation will I then always have to see my doctor via a video link?

If I have a video consultation will I then always have to see my doctor via a video link?
No, video consultations will only be used by our clinicians in circumstances where physical examinations and diagnostic tests are not required.

Video consultations are a solution to long journeys, car parking costs and delays in clinic currently experienced by patients but will not replace the requirement for patients to come into hospital for a physical examination.

I don’t have a device that has a camera and microphone; can I still have a video consultation?

Unfortunately not, to hold an effective video consultation our clinicians will need to both see and hear you therefore your device must have a camera and a microphone. Please press ‘Ok’ for all camera and microphone access pop ups.

Would you recommend using Wi-Fi or 4G to access my appointment?

You can access your appointment using either Wi-Fi or 4G, however we would recommend using a Wi-Fi network as 4G coverage across some parts of Devon can sometimes be unreliable. Accessing your appointment using Wi-Fi will also ensure you avoid unnecessary use of your data allowance.
